Description
It’s easy to overlook these small plants on the woodland floor. They appear like apparitions, most noticeable when they seem like a patch of snow against the warm browns and greens of summer. They remind me of the haints (or ghosts) common in Appalachian folklore. Eerie stories about paranormal activity and spirit- children crying in the woods are a staple of fireside folklore!
Ghost pipe looks like a mushroom at first glance, but this other-wordly plant simply lacks the chlorophyl which gives most plants their green color. Instead of relying on the sun for nutrients, ghost pipe relies on mycelial networks to feed from tree roots.
